Just a suggestion, if you don't want to go on a low carb diet, don't post to
the low-carb group. They are "invested" in it and won't give you good
advice on a wide-spectrum "balanced" diet.

Hi everyone,

This is kind of a last ditch effort to get my health and diet back on
track. I'm almost 30, my weight is 275, male, and my cholesterol is
around 180. One problem though is my blood pressure, which stays
around 120-140/80-90.

So now the diet debate. I've had good luck on the low-carb diet,
loosing 15 pounds already this year, but I'm wanting to make a true
change in my eating habits. Even though the meats, eggs, etc are nice
and I have a good tasty variety, I'm thinking it might be better to go
with a more traditional diet (fruits, veggies, etc). I'm also hoping
to start lifting weights and plan to set-up time with a weight trainer
a few times a week.

So back to the diet question... for the 'experts' out there, for
someone who wants to do more then simply loose weight, what diet route
would you guys suggest?

As for goals, this is a long-haul diet. I want something that's not
too unrestrictive. With the carbs diet, no breads, pastas, etc, but
with the low-fat diet, I think I can maybe have a small splurge meal
every so often. Also, my longterm goals are to drop around 60-70
pounds, but I'm not expecting that anytime soon. I want to not only
get physically healthy, but feel healthy too. On the low-carbs diet,
though I do loose weight, I still feel unhealthy. But maybe it's just
me.

Comments and suggestions please.. thanks,

Alex.

Sure we will. There is a such thing as a wide-specturm "balanced" diet,
that includes meat, fish, fowl, veggies, fruit, and limited grains that is
still low carb.

Sounds like you need to start limiting portions just a bit...calories do
count. Also, you need to begin, asap, your full-body weight lifting program
on a 3 times per week schedule, while doing some form of cardio (walking,
stationary bike, swimming, etc.) on a regular basis, say 4 or 5X per week
(not before weight training) for about 40 to 60 minutes.

You can start here for a weight training routine:

http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html

(ignore the fact that is appears to be directed at women only, much of the
info is useful for anyone)

What makes a diet that high on carbs "balanced" anyway? In what way is
eating 70% of your calories from carbs "balanced"? In what way is eating
5-11 servings of pasta and bread yet only eating 5-9 servings of fruits
and vegetables balanced? In fact, how can you call it "balanced" when
it's described by a pyramid? If anything, it's highly unbalanced.

Hi Tonia,

Actually I'm currently on the low-carb diet, and it has worked to a point. I
wanted the opinions of other low-carb dieters because of the other health issues
- high bloodpressure and potential high cholesterol.

My question was very open-ended for all groups, which is why I crossposted.
Bottom line is I figured once I lost some weight, my bloodpressure would drop.
Thus far I've dropped 15 pounds and it hasn't effected my blood pressure. The
diet I was given by my doctor that will help is a low-fat, low-calorie diet with
no real regard to carbs. This will lower my bloodpressure and cholesterol, but
it will slow my weight loss -- to a point.

Thanks for the comments, and take care.

Alex.

Fifteen pounds is probably not enough to affect blood pressure. How heavy
are you? Some blood pressure problems are hereditary rather than related to
weight and/or diet. When I was working one of the women there was very thin
but had to take medication for her hypertension.

Hey there Alex,

Severely limiting refined carbs and eating fresh veggies is a good diet for
anyone. I'm sure if you ask your doc if he thinks you should give up sugar,
white flour, and other refined carbs he'd probably think it's a positive
step. If you eat a lot of veggies you don't *need* fruits. If you like
fruits you can add them later. Have you checked out the South Beach Diet. It
may be just what you need. Good luck.
BTW, JC often says things like that because he thinks it will make you angry
and motivate you to prove him wrong. Kinda like a drill sargeant would do.
Don't let it get to you in a negative way.

This is kind of a last ditch effort to get my health and diet back
on track. I'm almost 30,

Greetings, Alex.

I would gently suggest that you not think of this as a last-ditch
effort. You're not even 30, for Pete's sake. I'm old enough to be your
mother, I changed my WOL six months ago, and this is far from a
last-ditch effort for me. My last-ditch effort will come one minute
before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Maintaining a healthy way of eating and exercising is a lifetime
commitment. You will stumble sometimes. We all do. By viewing your
current plan as a last-ditch effort, you are setting yourself up to
abandon everything the first time you slip up.

Don't get in that mindset. Understand that you should aim to keep on
the healthy path, and that when you do stray, you'll immediately get
back in the right direction.

So back to the diet question... for the 'experts' out there, for

someone who wants to do more then simply loose weight, what diet route
would you guys suggest?

I'm no expert. But, I don't think that there is a one-size-fits-all
way of healthy eating. The trick is to find what works for you.

I can tell you what has worked so far for me. I am continuing to lose
weight and improve my health, which you say you want. I have gone from
being unable to walk a city block without getting short of breath and
developing severe back pain to walking more than a mile. My diabetes
is under control and I'm not constantly exhausted.

I count calories. Nothing more exotic than that. I obsessively record
my food intake on fitday.com. And I get aerobic exercise – walking
now, aerobics classes soon, I hope. I know strength training is also
recommended, but I am unable to lift weights because of wrist
injuries.

As always, YMMV.

ATTENTION EVERYONE!

After doing some research, I have discovered JC's weight. How does 4 big
ones sound? Now I understand why she is so bitter! How sad...

BITCH, you are the LAST one to talk about anyone being fat!

Then she is more deserving of our compassion than our hatred. You should
realize that people who are experiencing that kind of self loathing will
often be angry and strike out at others. She needs a hug more than our
contempt. Offer her loving thoughts and surround her with white light in
your mind. If it is your inclination to do so, say a prayer for her to
gain wisdom and to find a way to control her world.
