Low carb before Atkins???
Atkins first published his book in 1972, but regardless of the fact his was
certainly not the first low carb diet. The concept can be traced back a very long time. Per the Protein Power book: - in 1825 Brillat-Savarin wrote "as it is has already been clearly shown, it is only because of grains and starches that fatty congestion can occur...a more or less rigid abstinence from everything that is starchy or floury will lead to the lessening of weight" - In the 1860's William Banting became famous, writing the first "international best seller" diet book after losing a great deal of weight on a diet free of starchy and sugary foods. - 'Eat and Grown Thin" by Vance Thompson was published in 1931, touting the virtues of a carbohydrate restricted diet. In fact, for a long time it seems that carb-restricted diets were almost the norm, and it was only into the second half of the 20th century that that concept began to change! Low carb before Atkins???
I believe Atkins first published his first book in the early 70s
(1972ish maybe.) But, he is by no means the first to come up with a low carb way of eating to help weight loss. It goes back at least to the 1860s. http://www.doatkins.com/html/modules...der=0&thold=-1 (If the above link doesn't work, please copy the entire URL and paste it into your browser's address window) TRC wrote: I found this book at an estate sale the other day: Martinis & Whipped Cream: The new Carbo-Cal Way to Lose Weight and Stay Slim. Low carb before Atkins???
As I've posted many times here--always to get flamed by idiots who treat
Atkins like a god--Low carbing was established long before Atkins hijacked it and branded it with his own name. The first popular low carb diets I was aware of came out in the very early 1960s--1962 or so and were called "The Airforce Diet" and "The Drinking Man's Diet." All my friends in high school tried them. I believe Dr. Atkins first tried a low carb diet in the early 60's but did not publish his book until he had tested it for several years. I recall a book - "Eat, Think and Be Slender" I think - which I now realize was basically a low carb diet. I lost 25 lbs. on it in 1961. BillJ |

How many are old enough to remember Dr. Stillman and his water diet? He
was a regular on Johnny Carson. He never claimed to have invented it but he did popularize it and he also kept going with it through the low fat years. Kitty. |
