Default Day 6 and still 6 pounds gone

250/244/200
August 23, 2006
Day 5 of 100 days. Still 6 pounds gone.

I got on my balance-beam scale this morning and saw that I still weigh
244 pounds. Almost 243, but not quite there yet. So on Day 6, still 6
pounds gone.

94 days ahead, but I know that if I keep at it, the weight will have
to come off (unless the laws of physics are suspended in my house, and
I know they are not).

I was talking to someone the other day about the needs that many
people have to give advice. I'm sure I fall into that trap myself, but
I try not to suggest things that would change a winning game. Somehow
we as humans almost inevitably feel the pressure to give advice.

There is a joke I like to tell, this about a funeral service at the
church.

The pastor is praising the deceased, Mr. Bill Johnson, telling the
community what a great person Mr. Johnson was, how much he helped the
community, etc. "Give him some chicken soup," says a voice from the
back.

The pastor is somewhat irritated but continues on, telling the
audience how many friends Mr. Johnson made, how many people were there
assembled and how many were waiting outside, and then again the voice
says, "Give him some chicken soup."

The pastor masters his emotions, suppressing the anger he feels, and
again starts talking about Mr. Johnson, noting his large family is in
the front pew, and he starts listing the close relatives. Again the
voice comes from the back row, "Give him some chicken soup."

The pastor then can take no more. He breaks off and says to the woman,
"Mr. Johnson has been dead for four days. How could that help?" And
the voice comes back, "So how could it hurt?"

But unsolicited advice can definitely hurt our efforts. It can
interfere with our progress to health, can make heavier those
limitations we set for ourselves, can get us to thinking that we
should stray from something that is being effective for us. It strikes
me that it is similar to looking at the clock in the middle of the
night if you are having trouble sleeping--looking at the clock does
absolutely no good and oftentimes interferes with sleep. In the middle
of the night people may be aware that they only have several more
hours of sleep, may again be disgusted at themselves for having
problems sleeping, etc. This sets off a chain behaviors that further
reduce sleep. Similar to avoiding clocks in the middle of the night
is the simple suggestion to avoid comments which might lead you
astray.

I do believe that if people are being successful in whatever way
program they're on, one of the best things we should say is, "Good
going! Keep at it!"

I hope everyone has a successful program that is able to keep at it!
If so, "My hat is off to you!"

Have a great rest of the weekend and a great week and month ahead!

Yours,

Caleb
