World Market sells Torani sugar-free syrups....just as good as DaVinci
IMHO. For DaVinci, try Marshall's, TJMaxx and Ross. Myron at the beach Sherry wrote: I gotta get me some of that daVinci's, they probably have it at World Market I'd think? They have everything else there...your faux ice cream sounds excellent! |

I know that my views aren't going to be the most popular, but I'll
share them anyway. First, let me start by saying that I understand that it's easy to miss stuff like bread, ice cream and chocolate. I believe that when you search for substitutes, even low carb ones, you are ultimately sabotaging yourself. Now before people start jumping down my throat, I repeat, that's just my opinion. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who can differentiate between the low carb version and the high carb version of chocolate or sweets and maybe your body will only crave the low carb version. Not mine. Give me sweet treats and I want more. I like the taste. I don't need it. I just like it. And I don't have the discipline to stop at at a measly 1/2 cup serving or 2 squares of the low carb version. Nope. After a bad day, or when I'm tired or lonely or feeling insecure I'll eat all of it. I wager to say that there are some of you out there in Usenet land who will too. In the years since I reached my goal weught I've learned to separate mouth hunger from real hunger. When I want something sweet, real sweet, I make a cup of tea or coffee and pour in some DaVinci. I have almost every flavor they make. (Netrition is my friend $4.95 for shipping any sized order......) Or, I brush my teeth with a citrusy toothpaste. I have found that I don't always need to eat. That demon inside me doesn't need to be fed every time. And for those who are thinking I deprive myself, I don't. I have dessert or treats sometimes. Usually when I'm out-when the portion is controlled and when I can share it with others. It's a balancing act. Juggling. And I believe that the way to getting to goal and staying there is retraining yourself-not substituting a low carb version of one food for its high carb counterpart. Duffy 182/122 since 12-01-01 |

Duffy 182/122 since 12-01-01 As you say, it's a balancing act...... :-) I've found that both can apply. Substituting works most of the time for me, but not all the time. My worst "cheat" is probably Churches fried chicken. I am NOT going to peel that breading off! It's the best part. I'll put a craving for that stuff off for weeks, then give in to it and restrict myself to the 3 piece meal. That lasts for 3 meals too. lol It freezes well. I know exactly where you are coming from. The trick is just not to do it every day. I've not had a real pastry now in at least 2 years, but did not get really "strict" about LC'ing until just this past January when I went to see a good endocrinologist. No matter how strict I was, it was not working like it should have. My thyroid levels were still off and I found out I had really bad IR that needed treating. Re-doing my thyroid meds and being put on Glucophage (Metformin) along with Adderall seems to have solved the problem. I have all the "will power" in the world if the damn plan actually works and I see the scale go down! If your endocrine system is F-d up enough, even strict LC'ing won't work well. It's very frustrating. Carb cravings were not really an issue. I'm a carnivoire at heart! Cheers! -- Om. "My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch." -Jack Nicholson |

Duffy 182/122 since 12-01-01 Duffy there's no way your opinion can be wrong, opinions aren't right or wrong, and your experience bears out that what you're saying is true for you - unpopular or not . I can say that when I eat my CarbQuik version of anything bread-y (LC biscuits or pizza crust - exception being sprout bread), I want more than I should have. And if I have more than I know I should (ie, 3 biscuits instead of 1), then I feel logy the next day. I've never had much of a sweet tooth so I don't have the same experience with the LC chocolate almond cookies I make, I can eat one and never think about them again. But the bread-y stuff I have to (a) watch my portions, and (b) exercise self-control. But it is worth it to me to have these foods occasionally (once a week or so, for one meal), as long as I only make enough for that one meal with no leftovers. Anyway, I understand what you are saying and can see how substituting can be an issue. -- Sherry 360/?/195 LC since 4/4/05 My LC Journey - www.livejournal.com/users/ShrinkingSherry |

I know that my views aren't going to be the most popular, but I'll share them anyway. Chuckle. I have often been accused of having unpopular opinions. First, let me start by saying that I understand that it's easy to miss stuff like bread, ice cream and chocolate. I believe that when you search for substitutes, even low carb ones, you are ultimately sabotaging yourself. Now before people start jumping down my throat, I repeat, that's just my opinion. Feeding an addiction makes it stronger. Starving an addiction makes it weaker. To the extent your desires are addictive, I agree that avoidance is best. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who can differentiate between the low carb version and the high carb version of chocolate or sweets and maybe your body will only crave the low carb version. Not mine. Give me sweet treats and I want more. I like the taste. I don't need it. I just like it. I wager to say that there are some of you out there in Usenet land who will too. I'll offer a moderated version that's my opinion: Generally the earlier you are in your plan the more important avoidance is. It takes time to learn what you can and can't get away with. It takes more time to learn what you will and won't get away with. It takes even more time to learn what you do and don't want to get away with. But just plain more months isn't enough, it has to be months learning your body's reactions and your mind's reactions. In the years since I reached my goal weught I've learned to separate mouth hunger from real hunger ... I have found it a hard lesson to learn. And for those who are thinking I deprive myself, I don't. I have dessert or treats sometimes. Usually when I'm out-when the portion is controlled and when I can share it with others. It's a balancing act. Juggling. Check. And I believe that the way to getting to goal and staying there is retraining yourself-not substituting a low carb version of one food for its high carb counterpart. Because of my opinions above, my reaction to a newbie asking about substitutes is different from my reaction to someone a year in asking about substitutes. Early on I think substitutes are usually a recipe for disaster, but the later in the less I think that's true. But the risk never goes away no matter how far into the plan, it just goes from high risk to lower, whatever lower means. |
